Artist David Minehan
Painting the Heart of the Irish Home
Irish artist David Minehan is a self-taught artist from Dungarvan, County Waterford, and has been painting for most of his life. He paints the Ireland many people carry in their heart: the warmth of a cottage kitchen, a kettle on the boil, a half-door left open to the day.
The kitchen, warm and waiting. A window onto green, and the sea somewhere beyond it.
Davidβs titles alone tell you what he is drawn toβ¦
Come Sit by the Fire. Welcome Home. In for the Tea. Heart of the Home.
Each is an invitation into the moment it captures rather than a description,
A chair pulled up to the fire. A book lying open on a sill. Flowers freshly picked and set into a jug. You feel less like a viewer and more like a guest who has arrived a few minutes early, left for a moment to settle inβto sit with the quiet before the kettle calls.
He traces much of his work back to memory: his grandfather's kitchen, the open half-door, and the fire at the center of everything. A place where family gathered, stories were shared, and visitors were always welcome.
A place to meet family and friends, a place to share stories.
These are the age-old traditions that inspire my paintings.

π Dungarvan, Ireland
From his upbringing in this harbor town on Ireland's southeast coast, to seeking out preserved Irish cottages all over the country, David Minehan carries forward a love of place, memory, and the quiet beauty of Ireland's cottage traditions.
From Dungarvan to Ireland's Hidden Cottages
Each cottage tells its own story. Together, they form a portrait of Ireland itself.
Set along Irelandβs southeast coast, Dungarvan is a harbor town where the sea, mountains, and countryside converge. It is a place rich in history, tradition, and the everyday beauty that has long inspired Irish artists and storytellers.
For David Minehan, that appreciation for place extends far beyond his hometown. Over the years, he has sought out cottages throughout Ireland, drawn to the historic homes, winding lanes, weathered stone walls, and quiet corners that still carry the character of an earlier Ireland. Many of the cottages featured in his paintings are inspired by real places he has encountered on his travels.
Yet his work is about more than architecture. Through warm light, open doors, glowing hearths, and carefully observed details, Minehan captures the feeling these homes evoke. His paintings invite us into spaces that speak of hospitality, belonging, and a way of life that remains deeply woven into Irelandβs cultural landscape.
